Why Earn a Volunteer and Community Resource Management Certificate?
The Volunteer and Community Resource Management Certificate is designed for students who are specifically interested in working with volunteers to help address a particular community issue or need.
It prepares you to work with volunteers in the community, nonprofit agencies and businesses. You'll learn key aspects of volunteer management, leadership, community asset mapping, program planning and evaluation. These skills are critical to most professions and can be easily transferred to other types of work.
Volunteer and Community Resource Management Certificate Highlights
This program is designed to prepare students with a skillset geared towards both the
public and private nonprofit sector.
Our department's full-time faculty consists of 11 nationally recognized experts in
their fields. Our faculty have published extensively in scholarly journals and presented
research at national conferences.
Courses address topics such as volunteer management and recruitment, fundraising,
grant writing, philanthropy, leadership, finance and community resources.
You'll learn some of the essentials of directing nonprofit organizations such as leadership,
management, marketing and operations.
You'll gain experience through a combination of theoretical and practical learning.
Volunteer and Community Resource Management Certificate Courses You Could Take
Community Development and Collaborative Planning (3 hrs)
Analyzes systems that measure community assets and resources. Explores the means of
identifying and approaching potential collaborative community partners, and focuses
on the development of joint proposals and/or business plans. Provides an overview
of the role of volunteer managers and agency leadership of community organizations
that provide resources in the development of a collaborative, capacity building community.
An ecological approach is used to analyze the full range of human service agency services,
health, social, educational, diagnostic, enrichment, religious, civic and legal. Students
have an opportunity to do field work with agency staff on assigned community projects.
Volunteer Program Planning and Evaluation (3 hrs)
Seminar designed to provide students with the basic skills necessary to systematically
design and plan volunteer programs, and evaluate their effectiveness. Special emphasis
is given to measuring program outcomes.
Leadership Theory and Practice for Volunteer Managers (3 hrs)
Overview of organizational leadership theory and practice for volunteer managers and
community leaders. Students examine and develop a range of skills in a number of interpersonal
areas group dynamics, decision-making, managing differences and leadership and influence
as they pertain to primarily nonprofit organizations and their ability to lead a volunteer
workforce.
Volunteer Management Concepts and Applications (3 hrs)
Analysis and review of day-to-day applications of management principles to the administrative
and operating practices of contemporary volunteer programs in the public, not-for-profit
and for-profit sectors. Focuses on volunteer program management and organization,
including targeting, recruiting, training, supervising, motivating, counseling, retaining
and recognizing volunteer workforces.
