Why Earn a Nonprofit Leadership Studies Minor?

With this minor, you will graduate with the knowledge and skills for program and service delivery, general management, volunteer management, grants administration, advocacy, general finance and fundraising.
In addition to earning a minor, you'll have the opportunity to earn a certificate in Volunteer and Community Resource Management and prepare for a certificate in Nonprofit Management Leadership.
Nonprofit Leadership Studies Minor Highlights
This program is designed to prepare students with a skillset geared towards both the
public and private nonprofit sector.
Our department's full-time faculty consists of 11 nationally recognized experts in
their fields. Our faculty have published extensively in scholarly journals and presented
research at national conferences.
Courses address topics such as volunteer management and recruitment, fundraising,
grant writing, philanthropy, leadership, finance and community resources.
Students have the opportunity to earn a certificate in volunteer and community resource
management.
You'll learn some of the essentials of directing nonprofit organizations such as leadership,
management, marketing and operations.
You'll gain experience through a combination of theoretical and practical learning.
Nonprofit Leadership Studies Minor Courses You Could Take
Leadership Theory and Practice for Volunteer Managers (3 hrs)Overview of organizational
leadership theory and practice for volunteer managers and community leaders. Students
examine and develop a range of skills in a number of interpersonal areas
group dynamics, decision-making, managing differences, and leadership and influence
as they pertain to primarily nonprofit organizations and their ability to lead a volunteer
workforce.
Community Development and Collaborative Planning (3 hrs)
Analyzes systems that measure community assets and resources. Explores the means of
identifying and approaching potential collaborative community partners, and focuses
on the development of joint proposals and/or business plans.
Introduction to Philanthropy and Fundraising (3 hrs)
Provides an overview of financial planning and fundraising practices in nonprofit
organizations from the perspective of the giver. Students learn to assess the financial
health of organizations, understand the duty of fiscal responsibility and develop
and implement fundraising strategies.
Volunteer Management Concepts and Applications (3 hrs)
Explores day to day applications of management principles to the administrative and
operating practices of contemporary volunteer programs in the public, not-for-profit,
and for-profit sectors. Focuses on volunteer program management and operations, including
targeting, recruiting, training, supervising, motivating, retaining, and recognizing
the volunteer workforces.
Negotiation (3 hrs)
Introduces the fundamentals of non-litigation strategies for a variety of business,
professional and personal settings. Learning and skills are developed through lecture,
role playing, out-of-class assignments, case studies and negotiation simulations.
